10 Carry-on Luggage Must-Haves

Written by: Katya on 24/03/17

It is very rare to find a plane passenger without a carry-on luggage. If you consider yourself a frequent traveller, then you know that a carry-on is a definite must-have. Think of it as your life-saver and an essential treasure chest just in case your checked-in baggage goes missing. It makes the aircraft feel a bit more like home (sans the uncomfortable reclining chairs and strangers for seatmates that is!)

Before deciding what to bring, you have to consider a couple of factors:

  • Carry-on weight restrictions. Most airlines require each passenger a maximum carry-on weight of 7 kilograms, most especially if you are boarding an international flight.
  • Size of your carry-on luggage. To avoid any inconveniences, make sure your luggage is of the allowable size for the overhead cabin.
  • Airline restrictions. Make sure that you are aware of what you can bring onboard and what you cannot bring such as aerosols and other bottled liquids which are more than 100ml. Inform yourself by visiting your airline’s official site or calling the respective trunk lines.

So what should you pack for carry-on? Here are my top picks:

1.- Yours and your kids’ passports and tickets. Out of everything that you should have with you, these two should be at the very top of your list! Make sure that you place these somewhere accessible at a particular area of your carry-on.

2.- Gum or anything that you can chew on. Since the ears tend to pop during landing, take off, and sometimes even during changes of altitude, gum helps relieve this queasy feeling. Pop some gum and keep on chewing!

3.- Ballpoint pen. Save yourself the hassle of borrowing one from a flight attendant or any other passenger just so you could fill up the customs/declaration card.

4.- Wallet containing your cash, credit cards, ATMs, driver’s license, and other important IDs that you should have with you at all times.

5.- A set of emergency clothes for you and your kids. Brace yourself for the possibility of losing your check-in luggage (it happens most of the time!). So while waiting for your airline to track it down and bring it back to you, the consolation that you get out of the whole experience is not looking like some sort of pauper without having anything extra to wear.

6.- Toiletry bag containing your facial wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, etc. Most airlines hand out free toiletry bags, but it’s better to take something extra with you. Make sure that bottled liquids shouldn’t exceed 100ml.

7.- Lotion and lip balm. Our skin tends to become dry due to changes in the atmosphere. Keep it moisturised by dabbing some lotion and lip balm, and drinking plenty of liquids.

8.- Electronic gadgets such as laptops, cellular phones, and iPods. Regardless of having the sign “fragile” slapped across your checked-in luggage’s surface, there is still no guarantee that your bag wouldn’t experience being thrown and bashed whilst being placed on the conveyor belt of the baggage carousel. Make sure that you have your gizmos with you at all times.

9.- Plugs, batteries, and adapters of your electronics.

10.- Books or any reading material. The long flight can get boring, and the onboard movies might not be to your liking. You can’t even will yourself to sleep if you’re not really that tired. The best resort is to read something to keep yourself entertained throughout the duration of your flight.
