No matter how long you’ve been married, may it be two weeks, two months, or a few years, it doesn’t change the fact that you need to spend a date night with your partner. And when we say date nights, it’s quality time spent together without having to worry about changing dirty nappies and such. This may sound like generic advice – something you read blogs every day or hear from people you know; but have you actually stopped to think and say, “yeah we need that!”?
Chances are, you are one of the 45% of couples who literally forgot date nights even exist. And if you are one of those, then you’d probably nod to this article and save it for remembering later – and eventually, forget.
Sadly, around 20% manage to go out once a month, so that leaves us with around 35% of couples who do the ritual religiously. Why such low numbers? You might think dating has become trivial or even corny at times. You probably see date nights as a form of luxury rather than an essential. You might even find dating as a time-waster or a less important event you can hardly squeeze into your busy schedule.
The truth is, you need it more than you ever thought you would.
Although date nights do not necessarily save all relationships on the brink of divorce nor does it guarantee lasting marriages; it is still one of the most classic ways to nourish your relationship with your husband or wife. It’s about sending the message to your partner – that you love each other and you are most willing to create that special and unique bond only the two of you can share.
Here are some reasons why you should not break the date night routine.
1. It reminds you that you are a couple
This is most especially true for those who have been married for quite a while. Dating takes you back to memory lane, to those romantic gestures that made you fall in love in the first place. It takes you back to courtship and puts meaning to whatever has come ordinary between you two.
The length of your relationship would probably make you feel like you’re business partners running a daycare so it’s time to break the ice and tell yourself this is the one I married to, not some other person sleeping next to me. It’s about looking at the eyes of the person you made vows with and getting that romantic spark to sustain your fire of love. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel like Romeo and Juliet sometimes?
2. It is fun.
Dates are your stress relievers. A date allows you to take the moment as it is and enjoy every second without having to worry about the pressing concerns of your day to day living. On the other hand, it is a great chance for you to extend emotional support to your partner when facing adversities.
Try to engage yourselves in novel and fun activities, and you will see how rewarding it would feel. Make sure you balance each other’s interests though, and not rely on your or your partner’s preference each time. Try something new or proactive, probably go hiking? Attend opera? Try a new restaurant? It doesn’t matter how extreme or non-extreme it is, as long as it is something that will make both of you feel good and renewed.
3. It is an opportunity to communicate.
It helps you deepen your relationship with your partner by understanding each other’s deepest sentiments that might have fallen by the wayside just because you didn’t have the time to talk – like really talk about life. Remember that your partner is your confidante and best friend. You can express yourself wholeheartedly without worrying about being judged.
4. It shows commitment.
Date nights allow you to provide a special space for your partner, implicitly saying that your marriage is worth the priority for. When you make efforts to nurture your relationship by spending time with each other despite the hectic days, you are more likely to grow closer than apart. Couples who spend more quality time together tend to be happier with their marriage as opposed to those who spend lesser times.
When we speak about date nights, there is actually no rule of thumb. It could be as grand as spending an exquisite restaurant or concert date, or as simple as having a cup of coffee in the lawn after tucking the kids into bed. Really, it’s not about what you do. It’s about how special and loved you make each other feel while doing it.
So stop saying you don’t have time. Mark your calendar and spend an awesome date with your loved one.
