If you absolutely can’t get going in the morning without a strong cup of coffee, or rely on it like a crutch to make it through the day, you are most likely lacking sleep or an essential component of your diet. After all, nobody is going to mistake coffee for a health super food. However, these days, just like dark chocolate and wine, new research has revealed some pretty unique health benefits found in coffee that are hard to ignore. An ever-increasing body of research has found that coffee (even large mounts of it), can impact everything from mood to exercise performance to memory—even a reduced risk of early death.
While remembering that too much coffee can increase stress, anxiety and even create a dependence on the caffeine, here are a few areas where upping your coffee intake might actually be beneficial for your health (if you limit the cream and sugar, of course)
One study by the Archive of Internal Medicine found that women who drank 2-3 cups of coffee every day were 15% less likely to develop depression. Additionally, those that drank about 4 cups per day were 20% less likely. For me coffee can definitely help my mood and I have found it to be particularly helpful on those days were I’m feeling a little down and finding it difficult to motivate.
Decreases Risk of Diabetes
When looking at coffee drinkers that drank 4 or more cups of coffee a day, researchers found these people to be 50% less likely to develop Type-2 diabetes. This is great news for me as diabetes runs in my family and it’s been a concern of mine for a long time. It’s no replacement for proper diet, of course, but it’s always good to know that I have that extra defense on my side.
Science now tells us that coffee can potentially help us maintain, or even lose, weight if we need to. This knowledge has been floating around anecdotally forever, but a study that took place in 2006 confirmed what many people already knew: coffee stimulates the metabolism and subjects experienced a higher level of fat oxidization. More recently, green coffee beans have been studied as a supplement that appears to aid in weight loss. This, however, is not attributed to the caffeine but to the chlorogenic acid, which is thought to reduce glucose absorption.
Great Antioxidative Benefits
Another healthful property found in coffee are the antioxidants, which are found in greater quantity than most fruits and vegetables. In fact, one study concluded that coffee prepared with fresh beans is the number one source for antioxidants in the standard North American diet. This is simply because American’s consume so much coffee on a daily basis compared with other countries. However, how much of those antioxidants are making it into the body where we can use them is another conversation altogether.
Increase in Performance Output
Coffee, specifically the caffeine found in coffee, has been shown time and time again to increase endurance and performance during short bouts of activity.
This can mean better and more productive workouts, which we can all benefit from. Next time you need to make it to the gym, but are feeling less than motivated, make sure to have a nice hot cup of coffee. Not only will it help your energy levels, but will increase the effectiveness of your workout too!
