Staff Post

Posted on April 30 2018

Autumn means cosy weather, hot ginger drinks, scarfs, bean stew, and trees changing into a beautiful, multi-coloured artwork. For people with seasonal allergies though, it also means terrible sneezing, runny nose, rashes, watery eyes, congestion, and other bothersome allergic reaction!

But why suffer unnecessarily? It's great to know that there are effective and natural allergy cures and remedies against seasonal allergies.

Causes and symptoms of seasonal allergies

When it comes to allergies, our diet, lifestyle, and overall health can make a huge difference. Although nature has its way of keeping the body in a state of balance, our bodies react every time factors such as the food we eat, our sleeping patterns, water, air, etc. enter our bodies. At a certain point, these can swamp or over-stimulate the immune system and even if these are normally harmless substances, it's enough to trigger allergy symptoms.

The following are the most common allergy attack symptoms

  • Watery and itchy eyes with clear, runny mucus and lots of sneezing
  • Nasal Drip
  • Fatigue
  • Hay fever
  • Upset stomach and nausea
  • A sore throat
  • Hives and/or eczema
  • Asthma

Whether your allergy symptoms are mild or miserable, here are some natural allergy cures that have been proven to work.

Fish oil supplement

It has been found that people with allergic asthma who pop a fish oil supplement for at least a month had lower levels of leukotrienes, chemicals that trigger an allergic reaction. Make sure to include fish oil supplement in your diet especially during the season transition.

Turmeric

When you think of turmeric, you may think of mouthwatering recipes such as curry and other Indian cuisines. There's a good reason for you to add more turmeric to your dishes since this common spice contains curcumin which is a natural decongestant and can help reduce allergy symptoms and ward off colds.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an effective natural remedy for a variety of health conditions such as allergies. Why? Because Apple cider vinegar, especially the one with "The Mother" has the ability to reduce the production of mucous and cleanse the lymphatic system. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, mix a teaspoon of organic and unfiltered apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and drink it three times a day. A great preventive measure is to drink a glass of it once daily.

Nettle leaf

A natural antihistamine, Nettle leaf effectively blocks the body's ability to produce histamine. What you can do is to include nettle in homemade herbal tea such as raspberry or peppermint especially during the allergy season. If you want an immediate allergy cure though, there are capsules made from dried nettle leaf which is more effective.

Take medicines at night

Hay fever symptoms are worst in the morning such as sneezing, runny nose, and scratchy throat. A great advice from Doctors is to take your meds at night, not in the morning.

Wear protective clothing

Wear appropriate clothing like long sleeve pants, sunglasses, and hat if you have to go outside. This is to keep pollen off your skin, hair, and eyes. Don't forget to wear a protective mask if you're doing a fall yard work such as mowing or raking since those can stir up mold and pollen.

Saline Spray

The best remedy against allergies is prevention. Before a symptom even strikes, nip it right in the bud. Before you feel anything, spritz your nostrils with saline spray a few times a week or at least once daily for routine maintenance. This method washes away pollen and reduces the risk of nasal congestion.
