Read the full interview below! Feel free to connect with Ashleigh on her social media pages as she continues to show us a dozen more ways to stay inspired and productive.

Hi, Ashleigh! Tell us something about yourself that is not related to planning?

Thanks so much for having me, Katya. Something that no one knows about me that you wouldn’t have seen on my channel, especially not recently, is that I am an avid scuba diver. I love being underwater and exploring new places under the sea!

What does a day in the life of Ashleigh look like?

I work weekends during footy season, so there is no real “average day” for me. But an average workday is me getting up early, getting Jet (our dog) fed and then I make Ryan and my breakfast. After that I get ready. I love makeup and really enjoy being creative with my makeup each morning so I can spend about 30-40 mins doing my makeup before running to get on the train. I use my time on the train to catch up on work, answer Facebook and YouTube comments and plan out anything that I haven’t already. I’m then at work til about 4.30 and then its back on the train, taking Jet for a walk, dinner and then sometimes filming or just generally playing around in my office with my craft stuff.

Let’s talk about planners. Your YouTube channel obviously shows your creativity and honest advice when it comes to planning your day/week. What is the story behind Plum_Mashable? How and when did you get into planning and becoming a YouTuber?

I think I’ve always been crafty. I have very little drawing skills, and although I love to take photos I don’t get to enjoy it as much as I’d like. Craft, in general, has been my creative outlet. I started with scrapbooking years and years ago and gave it up just because I didn’t have enough time to invest in it. Planning came about because I was just so busy. I like to be busy, but I have a terrible memory so I need to have a place to keep my schedule and ideas in one place. I really enjoyed decorating it, and after I spent so much time each week doing it, Ryan (my partner) suggested that I do a YouTube to share my ideas and thoughts with others. I was really hesitant at first, but Ryan convinced me it was a good idea. I was so nervous at first, but I’ve just tried to keep true to myself and give all of just me on camera it has seemed to work thus far!

Can you tell us your process when decorating your weekly spreads or planner inserts? When do you usually plan your upcoming week?

It depends on the week. Some of my ideas come when playing with new collections or items, others are suggested. When I have time, I do like to plan out the decoration a bit first. This is sometimes dot points or just something I want to feature. Others come from a sketch that then I can use any theme or collection with. These well-planned weeks generally come when I’ve had a not so busy week and I’ve had the time to really think about it. I try to keep my YouTube planner with me so that I always have the “right” place to store my ideas. These ideas don’t always come and some spreads are much more on the fly. Sometimes this works well because I can come up with some different ideas when a bit more under pressure.

What does your planning nook look like?

I am so lucky that I have a whole room for my planning, with a small part of it for my makeup. It is made up of two large desks (well one is actually a kitchen counter) but is such a lovely space that I love to spend time in. I have done a full video on how I’ve set up my room in my new house which you can find here – warning… it’s a long video!

Amidst your busy schedule, how do you find time to record your videos for YouTube?

Depending on how busy we are, Ryan and I try very hard to leave Tuesday nights free for filming. We can sometimes record up to three videos in one night, but we try not to do that unless we have to. This isn’t always the case because sometimes new collections come out and I want to get them out as quickly as I can. If we fall behind – which is bound to happen when you are so busy – we catch up whenever we can.

Are there moments where you feel somewhat uninspired or unmotivated to plan but you know you have to do it? If so, how do you conquer this?

YES! Oh gosh yes! Sometimes I just have no want to decorate or to think about what I have coming up in the next week. When decorating block comes, I try to find the most amazing item I have and think about how I can show that off in the best way. This will usually pull me out of my funk. I am really lucky that that has not really happened to this point. When it comes to just planning in general, I just know that if I don’t get it done that I will not only disappoint people, because that has been a huge motivator since my channel launched, but my week just doesn’t flow as well. By sitting down and forcing myself to plan – whether that is on camera or not – I think I save myself forgetting as much and I feel more comfortable in my productiveness for the week.

Do you think everyone should use a planner?

I think people like me, who forget things, need a planner. This doesn’t necessarily be a decorated planner like I do but just one to keep the basic to do’s for the week somewhere that you can reference them. There are lots of fantastic planners on the market, including your amazing mum planner, that make a beautiful place that if you don’t have time to decorate for a week you still have a lovely place to keep your thoughts in check.

What’s the best and worst thing (if there’s any) about being a “Plannerholic’?

The best thing has been my YouTube. I have found so many people who are stationary nuts that I have such a connection with and it has made me feel more accepted and happy in my general everyday life. The worst thing is the amount of money it can cost. Because I love to share new items and hauls so much I do find myself hunting for new items often which hurts our bank balance. I also get a lot of guilt because I do buy so much and sometimes I just don’t get around to using it.

Name 3 things that you cannot NOT include in your planner?

I cannot NOT have my weekly planner set out. I need to know what is going on in my week because I will honestly forget if I don’t.

I cannot NOT have my YouTube planner with me because I never know when an idea will hit, and when it does I need to have my planner ready for me to write notes, sketch ideas and keep swatches. It is also where I like to set out what each month on the channel will look like and be able to plan those videos out.

I cannot NOT have an inspirational quote on my dashboard. I move them around a lot, but there needs to be one there.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from today?

In regard to my channel, I hope it’s still going. I really love making videos and the planning community as a whole. If I can set myself a goal, I’d love to hit 5,000 subscribers and maybe move into making some of my own stickers or planner inserts. In life itself, I hope it’s very much like it is now. I am honestly so lucky that a lot of my dreams have come true and I’m now just working on what my next big dream will be so I can go chase that too!

Any business endeavours at the moment?

Not right now. I would love to move into making more things, but it’s just the time constraints that prevent this. There are so many wonderful products on the market, and the people that make them are just so inspiring. For now, I really want to focus on helping promote these fantastic makers, stores, and creators.

What would be your ultimate advice to aspiring “Plannerholics?”

This is my advice for everyone, not just “Plannerholics”. Be You. Always. I have always been told that I’m different and weird and it took such a long time for me to just embrace that being different and weird are not necessarily bad. Directly with planning, this is still relevant. Never look at something you’ve created and think it’s not good enough. Whatever works for you is what should be the most important.
