Winter Soups for the Soul: Hearty Soup Recipes for the Whole Family

Winter is the perfect season to have some steaming bowl of soup.  We’ve scoured the internet for hearty soup recipes that are both delicious and healthy, perfect for you and your family!


Chicken noodle soup is a staple dish for people with colds. It’s perfect since chicken is rich in tryptophan and vitamin B complex, making it a great stress reliever. It is also an ideal protein source since it doesn’t contain as much cholesterol compared to other meat products. Here is an easy and healthy dinner recipe made by the amazing Martha Stewart.



  • 3 quarts chicken broth
  • 3 carrots chopped into ⅛ inch rounds
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 8 ounces medium egg noodles
  • ¼ pound cooked chicken breast that’s been shredded
  • 1 tablespoon dried dill
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley


  • In a saucepan, allow chicken stock to simmer over medium to high heat
  • Add chopped carrots in broth then continue to let it simmer for 6 minutes
  • Get a separate saucepan then boil water with salt
  • Cook the noodles in the salted water for 6 minutes
  • Drain the cooked noodles
  • Add the noodles to the chicken stock along with the shredded chicken
  • Season the soup with salt and pepper (to your preference)
  • Cook the soup until it’s boiling
  • Once cooked, transfer it to a serving bowl and stir in the parsley and dill, then serve it to your family


If your farmer’s market offers an amazing array of seafood choices then this recipe is the perfect healthy alternative for you and your family! It contains white fish which is a great source of protein and it also has mussels, clams, and prawns which are good sources of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. They’re also rich in zinc and omega 3 fatty acids. This recipe is adapted from Jamie Oliver’s recipe.



  • 1 bulb of fennel, finely trimmed and chopped
  • 1 onion leek, finely trimmed and chopped
  • 3 celery sticks, finely trimmed and chopped
  • 1 fresh red chili, finely trimmed and chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped
  • 4 tomatoes, roughly chopped
  • 1 bunch of fresh thyme, picked leaves
  • 1 pound of white fish , chopped into chunks
  • Olive oil
  • 1 small glass of white wine
  • 1 pound of prawns, mussels, or clams (or mixed)
  • Extra virgin olive oilp
  • Salt
  • Pepper


  • Gently cook the fennel, leek, celery and most of the chilli and garlic over medium heat until soft
  • Add 1 quart of water and wine, bring to a boil then reduce the heat to a simmer till the vegetables are cooked
  • Add the tomatoes, thyme and fish
  • When the fish is opaque, add the other seafood and simmer for 2 minutes until the seafood are cooked (tip: mussels and clams open up when cooked)
  • Season with salt and pepper
  • Serve with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and chopped red chili

Cauliflower is a super vegetable since it’s rich in vitamin C, K and B complex. It’s a great vegetable to serve during the winter season since it is known for boosting your immune system. It is also an amazing source of fiber which is good for digestion — truly a hearty food rich in nutrients. This recipe is adapted from the Country Living website.



  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 2 ½ cups of vegetable stock
  • 1 pound cauliflower, separated into florets
  • ¾ pounds of yukon gold potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 4 sprigs thyme
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cups cubed ciabatta bread
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • ⅓ cup pomegranate seeds
  • Chopped chives, for garnishing


  • Mix the milk, vegetable stock, cauliflower, potato, onion, garlic, and thyme in a large saucepan.
  • Season with salt and pepper
  • Bring to boil over medium-high heat then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered until vegetables are very tender (18 to 20 minutes)
  • Melt the butter in a large skilled over medium heat
  • Cook and swirl the butter occasionally for 2 to 4 minutes until it is golden brown
  • Make your croutons by adding the bread in the butter while stirring it often. Do this for 10 to 12 minutes till bread is toasted. Season this with salt and pepper
  • Remove the thyme sprigs and then puree the soup in batches using a blender or a food processor until it is smooth
  • Add cream and pulse the processor or blender to combine the cream with the soup
  • Season the soup with salt and pepper
  • Serve the soup topped with croutons, pomegranate seeds, and chives

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium jalapeno pepper, chopped
  • ½ medium green pepper
  • 1 pound boneless and skinless chicken breasts

  • ½ cup dry white wine or ½ cup water
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 1 cup non-fat tortilla chips, for garnishing


  • Saute the onion, garlic, jalapeno, and green pepper with olive oil in a large pot until they’re tender
  • Add the rest of the ingredients to the large pot and bring to a boil
  • After 15 minutes, remove the chicken breasts then shred them
  • Return the pulled chicken to the pot and simmer for 45 minutes
  • Serve the soup topped with crushed tortilla chips
