How to Better Organise Your Bills Using File Folders

Written by: Katya on 01/01/17

It is a fact that a lot of people consider paperwork as their arch nemesis. The frequent flooding of bills and junk mail may seem a bit overwhelming for those who aren’t really fond of delving into piles of unnecessary documents. Let’s face it, junk mail and letters that are completely irrelevant can be pretty annoying and such a waste of time. Junk mail is a form of marketing strategy of companies who unfortunately have your mailing address; while irrelevant letters are those which are addressed to someone else who doesn’t live in your house or you believe doesn’t exist at all! Contacting your local post office about opting out of receiving such mail is ideal. Spare yourself the agony and focus on the more important things in your mailbox.

Getting organized could be a bit tricky, most especially if you’re someone who’s constantly on the move and barely has the time to sit down and sort things out. Nonetheless, now is the perfect time to do so (if you don’t want to deal with the clutter in the future, that is!) Allocate a day of the week for filing. When you’ve decided on that, here are a few organization tips to help you on your way:

1. Look for a nice-looking filing box big enough to fit your folders, magazines, and catalogs. Purchase online or go to your favorite local office supplies shops. Choose a design that you wouldn’t mind looking at for a substantial amount of time.

2. Purchase folders and labels that would go in the box; or you can also customize your own labels if you’re feeling artsy.

3. Determine the categories. The easiest way to do this is to gather a month’s worth of mail and then dividing them into the appropriate groups. Here are a few label/category suggestions:

a. Bills to pay (this could include telephone, gas, electricity, water bills, and the likes)
b. To file or to keep
c. To throw or to shred
d. Rebates (pending and to-dos)
e. Important receipts
f. Vouchers / Invoices
g. Kids’ documents
h. Catalogues

4. Once you have collated everything and have placed them neatly into their respective folders, place your filing box on somewhere that is visible and can easily be accessed by you should you need it in the future.

How about you, how do you keep the clutter away? Let us know in the comments section below! Happy filing!
